Ramps & Repairs
We are committed to ensuring that all our neighbors in the community have access to all available resources in their time of need.
For many families and individuals living in Northumberland and Lancaster, leaving the house isn’t an option. For the 15% of families living at or below poverty in Northumberland County, that means that basic home repairs and necessities aren’t being done.
The Interfaith Service Council Ramps & Repairs division changes lives of our neighbors on a weekly basis by building wheelchair ramps, installing or fixing roofs, building steps and handrails, and other basic home repairs for families and individuals with limited income, people with physical disabilities and others in need. Ramps and home repairs are provided without regard to age, gender, religion, race or ethnicity.
Every year Interfaith Service Council partners with various church groups to provide our services within the community. One of the longest standing relationships is with Southside Church in Chesterfield, Virginia, who for the past twenty years has provided volunteers ranging in age from 12-70 to spend a week in Kilmarnock, changing not only the lives of the people who are on the mission trip, but the lives of the people they are serving.
One of their most notable service projects includes helping a lady who at that time was in stage 4 terminal cancer repair her roof and painting her house. What the group did not realize, was the morning they were on the roof, the homeowner was attending the funeral of her adult daughter. Completing the project, the homeowner was standing in the driveway crying, as the group not only fixed her roof, but painted her house and the shed to match. All she wanted was a livable house that looked decent for when she passed her house onto her kids.
Volunteers Make It Happen
Within the past twelve months, approximately 1600 volunteer hours were served by individuals from within the community and all the way from Richmond, Virginia and beyond.
