A Month of Meeting Neighbors Where They Are

For the families served by the Interfaith Service Council, each request for help represents a moment of vulnerability—and a hope that someone will respond. Over the past month, Interfaith worked across Lancaster and Northumberland Counties, Virginia, meeting those moments with care, coordination, and compassion.
Much of the work focused on safety and accessibility. Volunteers built wheelchair ramps, restoring safe entry for homeowners who had been struggling to come and go from their own homes. Stairs, landings, and stoops that had become unstable were repaired or replaced, reducing fall risks and helping residents remain secure where they live.
Other requests required immediate attention to prevent further damage. Floors weakened by long-term wear or water exposure were replaced, stabilizing homes that had become unsafe. Water-related issues were addressed as well, including replacing a failing water heater and restoring water service where it had been lost—essential steps that allowed households to function normally again.
Roofing concerns also surfaced this month. Interfaith coordinated both roof replacement and roof repair projects, including securing donated shingles to help make one of those repairs possible. Interior sheetrock repairs were completed where previous roof leaks had caused damage, helping bring homes back to a safe and livable condition.
Behind every repair was a household facing real challenges—many of them older adults, individuals with disabilities, or neighbors living on limited incomes. Each completed job meant one less unsafe condition, one less worry, and one more person able to remain in their home with dignity.
Alongside repair work, Interfaith continued to strengthen the support systems that make this service possible. A new partnership was established to provide lodging for volunteer groups, and three additional groups were scheduled to serve in the coming months. Outreach efforts also continued, including sharing Interfaith’s mission during Sunday service at Beulah Baptist Church and inviting the community to be part of this work.
As the month comes to a close, Interfaith has four approved jobs ready to begin and nine additional requests pending. The next volunteer group is scheduled to serve July 12–15, with preparations already underway.
Every project completed this month was made possible through generosity—volunteers giving their time, donors providing resources, and partners stepping forward to help neighbors in need. With continued support, Interfaith Service Council will keep responding, one household at a time, ensuring that no one has to face unsafe living conditions alone.
